The last Meter in Putting: Why short putts should be practiced differently

For recreational golfers, this raises an interesting training question:

At what distance can we use our limited practice time and still-developing control so that even small improvements can have the greatest possible effect?

For us, one particularly interesting practice area is the final 3 to 5 feet before the hole, roughly between 1 and 1.5 meters.

So when we refer to the “last meter” in this article, we use the term to describe this short scoring range rather than a distance limited to exactly one meter.

This does not mean that longer putts are less important. The training objective simply changes. With medium and long putts, the emphasis is much more on controlling the overall distance and leaving the next putt as straightforward as possible. Within the final 3 to 5 feet, however, improved control has a greater chance of directly saving a stroke.

The last meter is a different animal

Medium and long putts primarily require good control of the overall distance. Being able to putt a ball from 10, 15 or 20 meters close enough to leave a straightforward next putt is an important skill.

Within the short scoring range of the final 3 to 5 feet, the task changes.

Now, much more often, the objective is to actually save the stroke.

Simply rolling the ball roughly towards the hole is not enough. Several pieces of information and several skills have to work together.

The golfer has to recognize which way the green slopes. They need to estimate how much slope there is. From this, a possible start line emerges. And that start line only works in combination with the appropriate speed.

Break and speed belong together.

On the same slope, a slower putt requires a different start line from a faster putt.

For many recreational golfers, this relationship is anything but obvious at first.

Many golfers already spend relatively little time on the putting green.

And when they do practice there, we often see a familiar pattern: three balls out of the bag, a few putts to different holes, and then they move on.

They have putted.

But what skill have they actually developed?

Especially for higher-handicap golfers, the last meter often remains something of a mystery. Not necessarily because they have hit too few putts, but because they have never approached this task systematically and often do not know exactly what they should be practicing.

There is another problem: without clear references, feedback is often missing. In this image, the putter is sitting slightly on its toe. As a result, the putter’s alignment line, and therefore the clubface, is not pointing exactly at the intended target.

The golfer may therefore believe they are aligned correctly even though the actual starting alignment is already off.

More repetitions alone will not solve this problem.

First, we need to understand what information the golfer needs and which skills they need to learn to control.

Reading the break is only the beginning

Putting practice on the green: golfers learn to read lines, gather information and analyze putts systematically.

The first step is simply learning to recognize which way the green slopes. There are different ways to teach a golfer how to observe and read a green.

But “left to right” is not enough.

The next step is more difficult: How much slope is there? Only when we can make a reasonable estimate of the amount of break can we begin to establish a useful start line. And even that start line is not yet a complete solution.

We still need the appropriate speed. In simplified form, the learning process can therefore be described like this:

Recognize the direction of the slope → estimate the amount of slope → determine the start line → choose the appropriate speed → start the ball under control.

In our lessons, we regularly see an interesting moment during this process.

Golfers begin to realize that until now they have processed considerably less information and put considerably less effort into the task than a truly controlled solution actually requires.

You could say: the lights come on.

We want to learn how a putt behaves

Our goal is therefore not simply to hole more short putts. We want to understand how putts behave and which parts of that behavior we can influence.

We learn to assess slope. We learn to start the ball accurately on an intended line. And we learn to deliberately produce different speeds.

At first, we sometimes use training aids and visible references. They help us compare perception with the actual result.

Later, these aids are removed again. The goal is not to become dependent on training aids on the golf course. The goal is for the golfer to recognize the information independently, process it and ultimately produce an appropriate solution.

Speed is not a side effect

Speed plays a central role in all of these tasks. If speed control is an essential putting skill, we should develop it deliberately. In the last meter, this involves very small differences. That makes the task quite different from many traditional distance-control drills.

On a putt from 10 or 20 meters, we have to control large differences in the amount of energy required. Within approximately 1 to 1.5 meters, however, we need much finer control.

One ball might need to roll just slightly slower than the previous one. Not a meter shorter. Just a little less. And these small differences can be trained.

One simple task changes the practice

Golfer uses a zone marked by tees to practice fine speed control on short putts.

A drill from our Practice Lab demonstrates this principle very well. Near the edge of the green, we mark a line with two tees. The golfer plays three balls.

Ball two should roll slightly farther than ball one. Ball three should roll slightly farther than ball two. However, all three balls must finish between the tee line and the edge of the green. If the golfer completes the task successfully, the tee line is moved approximately half a foot closer to the edge of the green.

The available space becomes smaller, increasing the demand on speed control. If the golfer does not complete the task, the line is moved approximately half a foot back again.

In this way, the difficulty adapts to the golfer’s current ability. Suddenly, the task is no longer simply to hit three putts.

The golfer has to deliberately produce three different speeds and control them within an increasingly smaller area.

From general control to fine control

The smaller this area becomes, the more interesting the task gets. The golfer begins to notice differences that previously seemed almost irrelevant. Slightly too much speed. Slightly too little.

A change in stroke length. A difference in contact. And this is exactly the fine control we need when we later combine break and start line.

No matter how well a start line has been chosen, if the speed does not match, the path of the putt changes as well.

The last meter therefore requires more than confidence or good technique.

It requires control.

First understand it, then stabilize it, then perform it under pressure

For us, the learning process does not end there. Being able to produce a skill once does not automatically mean that it is available on the golf course.

First, the technical foundations and an understanding of the task need to be in place. Then we try to stabilize the control. After that, we need to test whether the skill still works when the task becomes more difficult and the result begins to matter.

That is exactly why we work with scores, changing distances, target zones, consequences and competitive formats in the Practice Lab.

For longer putts, these might include tasks from 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25 meters. They are not only about distance control. The putting drills deliberately create situations in which the golfer has to deal with uncertainty, outcome pressure and their own reactions to it.

Pressure creates Diamonds

The skill developed earlier now has to remain available under pressure. The last meter belongs in this process as well.

First, we understand what needs to happen.

Then we learn to control it.

Then we stabilize that control.

And eventually, the golfer has to show that they can still access it when the putt counts.

Small improvement, big impact

Of course, we can also practice putts from three, five or ten meters.

And we should.

But the statistics remind us to keep our expectations realistic. As distance increases, holing putts quickly becomes much more difficult, even for tour players. On the PGA Tour, the make rate from five feet is still considerably higher than from the range between five and ten feet. (PGA Tour⁠)

For a recreational golfer, it can therefore make sense to invest part of their practice time in an area where a manageable improvement in control can frequently have a direct effect on the score.

The final 1 to 1.5 meters are a particularly interesting range for this.

Not because they are easy.

But precisely because small differences in perception, start line and speed can determine whether two putts become one.
