
Golfers often associate a club with a consistent ball flight.
A 7-iron flies to a certain height, a 5-iron stays lower, and a 9-iron climbs more quickly. This rough idea helps with club selection. However, it can also lead to a dangerous oversimplification.
After all, the same bat doesn’t produce the same trajectory with every swing.
A FlightScope test using a 7-iron clearly demonstrates this. At the point on the trajectory under consideration, the balls were at an altitude of approximately two to six meters.
That means: The difference between the lowest and highest ball flight was about four meters.
For a normal shot onto an open green, this deviation may not be critical. But for a narrow opening under or between branches, it can determine whether the ball flies safely through or hits the obstacle.
A bat does not have a single trajectory
Golfers often talk about the “ball flight of a 7-iron” as if it were always the same.
In reality, every ball flight results from the interplay of various factors:
- dynamic loft,
- Point of contact on the clubface,
- Clubhead speed,
- Angle of incidence,
- Ball position,
- Contact with the ground and grass,
- Clubface position,
- and the quality of the moment of connection.
Even small changes can affect how high the ball starts and how fast it rises afterward.
That is why a 7-iron does not have a single fixed trajectory. It produces a range of possible ball flights.
Four meters is a very long time for a game window

A deviation of four meters may not sound like much on paper. In a recovery situation, however, it is enormous.
For example, a gap between branches might be only two or three meters high. Even if a shot with a 7-iron happens to fit through it perfectly once, that doesn’t mean the player can reliably replicate that shot every time.
The next ball can:
- start on a much flatter slope,
- rise faster,
- gain more or less elevation by choosing a different meeting point,
- or already be on a different trajectory outside the window.
This makes it clear: The crucial question is not just whether a single ball went through the window.
The more important question is:
How much does the ball’s flight typically vary?
The perfect swing is not a sufficient foundation

Many golfers judge special shots based on their best attempt.
If you manage to hit a low shot under a branch, you might quickly get the impression that you’ve mastered that shot. But a single good shot says little about how reliably you can consistently achieve the necessary height.
Therefore, when making a strategic decision, it is not enough to simply know:
I’ve pulled off this shot before.
The key point is:
How often can I replicate this launch and climb profile under comparable conditions?
A window isn’t playable just because the perfect shot fits through it. It must also allow enough room for the player’s normal range of play.
Takeoff altitude and climb profile must be considered together

When the playing window is narrow, many golfers focus only on the height of the branch.
It’s not just how high the ball flies overall that matters. What’s most important is at which point in its flight path the ball reaches a certain height.
A ball may start out low and then rise very quickly. Another may start a little higher but reach its maximum height later. Both shots may have been hit with the same club and yet reach completely different heights at a certain point.
That’s why golfers need to learn not to think only in terms of “high” or “low.”
You have to read the early ball flight:
- Where does the ball start?
- How fast is it rising?
- How tall is he at the obstacle?
- How does the flight proceed from there?
- Where will the ball land?
- What will the next game situation be?
Only this comprehensive analysis transforms a rough idea into a useful visual representation.
A safety margin means more than just a clear view

Suppose a visible window is six meters high.
If the ball’s flight with a 7-iron varies between two and six meters at this point, the window is not automatically six meters wide. The highest measured ball already takes up the entire available height.
There is no margin of safety left.
A branch, a slightly different ball position, a slightly higher point of contact, or a slight change in the swing can be enough to make the window unplayable.
To make an informed decision, a golfer must therefore not only ask:
Will my best shot go through?
Rather:
Will my normal ball flight clear it with a sufficient safety margin?
It is precisely this difference that distinguishes a theoretically possible option from one that is practically viable.
Repeatability is a skill in its own right

A special shot isn’t mastered just because you’ve succeeded at it once.
Only when the player:
- knows the desired tee time,
- can achieve the required takeoff altitude,
- can assess the early rise curve,
- detects typical deviations,
- and can repeat the stroke under different conditions,
A resilient skill is developed.
That’s why the Practice Lab isn’t just about trying out different shots. It’s about making their consistency visible.

Why special shots need to be practiced specifically
A low recovery shot does not automatically result simply because a golfer uses a longer club or places the ball farther back.
While such changes do affect the ball’s flight, they often also change:
- the meeting place,
- the direction,
- the clubface position,
- the length,
- the rolling component,
- and the probability of failure.
That is why special shots must be practiced systematically.
The player must learn which adjustment actually produces which effect. These include, among other things:
- Choosing a racket,
- Ball position,
- Grip position,
- Swing length,
- Swing speed,
- Finish height,
- and how the ball behaves after it lands.
Only through comparison, measurement, and repetition can we form a realistic picture of what can be controlled.
What the measurement means for the strategy
The FlightScope data does not indicate that a 7-iron is inherently unsuitable for tight landing zones.
It shows something more important:
The club alone does not adequately describe the ball’s flight.
Two golfers can use the same club and produce completely different heights. Even the same golfer can hit the ball with significantly different trajectories using the same club, without having consciously planned to do so.
In terms of strategy, this means:
- A visible window must correspond to the actual variation in the ball’s flight path.
- The decision should not be based on the best shot.
- Safety margins must account for normal error.
- Special shots must be tested, not just assumed.
- A golfer needs to know which shot trajectory he can actually replicate.
The key question before a special shot

Given the narrow timeframe, this question isn’t enough:
What kind of racket do I play with?
It’s more helpful to:
What kind of ball flight variation will I achieve with this club, and will that variation definitely fit through the available window?
This question changes the entire assessment of the situation. It brings together technology, measurement, repeatability, and the quality of decision-making.
After all, the same racket doesn’t automatically produce the same ball flight. And a four-meter difference can be more than a match can handle.
